If I am staying in Elizabeth, NJ (very close to Newark International Airport) . . .?

what is the best way to get to Manhattan (via train)? And will I need to transfer? I'd be going into Penn Station I ume from everything I've looked at. How safe will it be riding at night (I will be by myself) if I'm on it around 11 p.m. at night? Thanks.
