Is he really falling for me?

we are in college.so this is the story his girlfriend from high school and him dated two years and once they got to college they discovered they wouldn't work because she wanted to "see what else was out there". they broke up and we started talking...to make along story short he came into the relationship with me (in late october) still in love with her but wanting to move on which i understood that you cant just fall outta love.basically him and her emotionally were on and off but i stuck around. its been many times hes said hes over her then she came running back and he put me and him on pause. now he says hes gotten to the point where he says he doesn't need her and that hes falling for me but hes scared to get hurt again. ive fallin in love with him and ive told him that. how do i know if hes really falling for me? or if its just a game? if it wasnt for his feelings for her we would be perfect.
