I'm going to a Bat Mitzvah and don't know what's appropriate to wear...?

ok, i know a suit or tux or whatever... but having problems with shirt. white shirt- or black? the black looks better (i have a black on down/collar with a white tie), but i don't know if that's too dark for a bat mitzvah. are there colors that i should avoid etc?
