Books in diary form; do they work?

Have you ever read any of Sue Townsend's Adrian Mole books? They are written in diary mode, and are hugely popular. I enjoyed them. Diary mode creates an intimacy that even first person narrative can't. It also draws the reader on from entry to entry, making it hard to put down. There's nothing wrong with diary mode, as long as it's written well!
