New to Hypothyroidism?

I've discovered lately that I have the Hypothyroidism condition, now it's only a matter of finding someone to diagnose it! The doctors won't do the alternative to the TSH test (which is not at accurate as most doctors want you to think) unless my TSH levels are abnormal. I can't get to a specialist (endoctrinologist) without a referal from my family doc. I'm in the process of getting a new family doctor and I don't want to screw this up. I have all the symptoms of the disease, with two generations before me having it too - but because I'm thin the doctors don't take me seriously. Has anybody out there gone through this experience and can you tell me any information that might help me convince a doctor that his TSH test is not good enough?
